Greetings, Fanatics!
The month of October has certainly been a busy one for us. We attended two shows, The Market @ Mid-Main on Oct. 9th and Houston Halloween Fest on the 19th.
The Market is a seasonal, monthly craft market where Houston's local artisans and makers come out and display their wares for sale.
It's sponsored by The Tinderbox and takes place across the street from Houston's Mid Main block. Aaron and I are used to doing pop culture and comic conventions, so the laid back atmosphere and small size of the event was a change of pace for us. There were about 10 vendors there with a wide variety of high quality handmade goods. As far as I can tell, there's a Market every month (excluding the hotter summer months), and shopping there is a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon and support local artists.
My favorite part: a little snow cone truck called Snow Cone Angels was there and Aaron and I shared a Mint, Lime, and Honeydew snow cone that was wonderful. They juice fresh fruits and offer super fine shaved ice. I highly recommend trying one if you get the chance.
Our second market this month was The Houston Halloween Festival and Horror con, sponsored and organized by The Houston Zombie Walk and Comicpalooza. It took place at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston from noon to 9 p.m. This was Houston Halloween Festival's first year and I was very excited to participate in a horror convention in Houston. The Festival featured two stages for musical acts, fair rides and food vendors outside, and goods vendors in the park's concourse. There was a good variety of vendors and we were placed near one of the ends of the vendor area, in between a lovely handmade apron vendor and steam-punk club "Airship Intrepid", who had a very impressive Nightmare Before Christmas photo booth set up with various members dressed up as the cast. Vanilla Ice was the headlining act for the evening, so Aaron and I stuck around to see him. At one point, Vanilla Ice's drummer threw a drumstick into the crowd and it landed directly in front of Aaron. Rather than grabbing it, we opted to let someone who obviously really wanted it snatch it from the throng of people who rushed for it. It was a fun show.
Highlights: Aaron traded one of the NiteMite plushes to our neighbor, Alexenia, for a darling mushroom hostess apron! The owner, Ksania, is very sweet. Also, I tried spumoni gelato for the first time and now I have a new favorite flavor!
Stay Fanatic,
Megh
